The Finding J.R. Shannon

The Finding coverABOUT JOHN GOLLEHON

One of gambling's most prolific authors is retiring from the genre. John Gollehon has written twenty-eight books spilling into four decades with over a million copies in print. Now, turning his attention away from gambling, Gollehon has raised eyebrows with a non-secular work, "The Finding" by J.R. Shannon, the author's pseudonym.

Is there a story here? Indeed there is. "I'm not opposed to gambling per se," says Gollehon, "but I take strong exception to the proliferation of casinos and the rampant spread of gambling websites." He also doesn't like the glamorization of gambling. "We're bombarded with television ads that make winning look easy. And it's not just impressionable youth who buy into this ruse, but seniors, too." Through his own studies, Gollehon has concluded that players today do not take gambling seriously. At least not when compared to decades ago. "Today they play for fun and go gambling on a whim, as if they were going to the movies. What they do learn is to never complain about the cost of movie tickets!"

Gollehon didn't enter the business world publishing books. He started a speaker manufacturing business in 1968 that went on to employ 40 people. He made speakers for public address, but found his niche selling to music stores equipping performers from rock bands to show groups. Several thousand speakers were made each year.

He raced horses at major tracks, manufactured golf clubs, opened a specialty restaurant, and eventually started publishing. Life was good for John Gollehon. One success after another. Except for these weird twitches in his right arm, terrible leg cramps, and an occasional bout with light-headedness. But he was too busy to worry.

His doctor scheduled an MRI. The nurse who cuffed him for a blood pressure reading before the test checked and rechecked the results. "My God, I haven't seen blood pressure this low in my 15 years!" she exclaimed. "You should be dead!"

The results of the test came back Parkinson's. And so ended Gollehon's string of wins.

He is now looking for other publishers to buy rights to his titles. But he so wants to publish Christian manuscripts. Can he rebuild? If anyone can... .

Simon & Schuster carries several of his original titles including a gambling bestseller, "Casino Games," a book Gollehon wrote in 1985.

SO WHAT'S HIS
NEW NOVEL ABOUT?

"The Finding" is the story of ancient scrolls and the retired detective and his wife who search for them. The early first-century writings, simply referred to as "Q," are believed to actually exist according to many Bible scholars, shedding new light on the revelations of our Lord. But the daring duo soon question if scrolls are all they're looking for.

Finally, Gollehon felt there was purpose to his writings as he fought the effects of Parkinson's disease. "Difficult as it was, I always believed that someone else was guiding my hand. On several occasions, I did what most new writers do: I wrote myself into a corner. But there was always an escape. I remember when trying to bring Serelli, the Israeli antiquities broker, back into the story, I just couldn't fit him back in. But later that day, while reading the newspaper, I came across a story about a construction crew in Jerusalem inadvertently digging up the Pool of Siloam, and discovering a 'treasure' of ancient artifacts. That's it! I thought. That's how I can set up my antagonist for his fatal fall."

Before readers jump to conclusions, understand that "The Finding" isn't another blatant skewing of religious fact and fiction. It's a "feel good" novel that will lift you up and stir your emotions in a mix of mystery, inspiration, and even a dollop of humor. "The Finding" builds to a stunning conclusion on Christmas Eve, with all the elements of a great holiday story.

Editor's note: The author's rewrites of this exciting novel have culminated in an ebook version now available at major booksellers online. From the Book

There would be no need to knock, for as they approached the door it began to open slowly… as if it were a great burden to move. And then he appeared, the stalwart guardian of the gate; every bit the image Kyle imagined. Frail, with long strands of hair falling to his heavy, red robe. He welcomed his guests with a painful-looking smile as if it cracked his pale skin. “Please excuse the absence of natural light… the enemy of paper, you know. We must keep this mansion dry and dark.”

Gamblers Edge

From the Book

Some authors like to use the term hit and run when describing how to strike quickly and escape with your winnings. I like the term blitz.

“Where’s your buddy?” says the pit boss to my blackjack-playing friend.

I had left after only a few hands. But they were great hands!

“He flew in and he flew out,” my friend said. He’s partially right. I flew in, grabbed the payload, then flew out.

How to Make Birdies

From the Book

Here’s a statistic that you might find hard to believe: Over 95 percent of all golfers do not significantly improve their game. Once they’ve reached a certain level of play, it’s as if they’ve accepted it as par for the course. But they haven’t fully resigned themselves to the idea that they’ll never win the club championship. Otherwise, how do you explain all those full sets of old clubs in the corner of the garage? Sure, a new set of high-tech clubs is the easy way to improve that handicap.

That’s the thinking. And that thinking is wrong. What you are more likely to accomplish with that new set of clubs is putting another “old” set of clubs on the block for next spring’s garage sale.
